We have a fabulous collection of colourful Rhododendrons and Azaleas, not only in the Gardens but also for sale in the Nursery.
The climate and soil are such that their cultivation is ideal here with plenty of moisture and peaty soil. The natural valley with steep sides and stream were the basis for creating the gardens in this woodland. The shelter created by the valley enables us to grow many of the large leaved species such as Rhododendron falconeri, Rhododendron hodgsonii, and the beautiful yellow flowering Rhododendron macabeanum.
Planting started in 1982 and has been an on-going project ever since, now with over 550 different Azaleas, Rhododendron species and hybrids many of which are at their prime.

Rhododendron macabeanum has very large trusses of creamy yellow flowers with lovely blotches inside the bell-shaped petals. They contrast with the large deep green leaves. A fabulous and majestic plant growing to 15 or 20ft flowering in March to April.

Rhododendron argyrophyllum is a very floriferous, rounded to erect shrub. It has a thin fine-textured silver to fawn indumentum to the lower surface of its leaves.

Rhododendron 'Halfdan Lem' produces beautiful bright red flowers with darker spots on the dorsal lobes in large tight trusses of about 12 or 13 flowers. It has deep green leaves and the plant is vigorous. It grows to around eight feet tall and flowers in May.

Rhododendron 'Hotei' is probably the best yellow Rhododendron we sell. It is slow to come into flower, but well worth the wait. Growing to around five feet tall and four feet wide it flowers in May through to June. It requires dappled shade to bring out its lovely lemon colour. It is much admired by our visitors.

Rhododendron 'May Day' is an old favourite of ours pictured here in the Rhododendron dell. Very floriferous, it produces brilliant orange-scarlet flowers in May. Once the petals have fallen we are left with the leaves having a lovely tan indumentum throughout the rest of the year. Wider than tall, it remains compact and very hardy with us.

Rhododendron 'Mrs Furnivall' is a magnificent dense-growing bush to 4ft high and 5ft wide, producing compact trusses of widely funnel-shaped, light rose-pink flowers, with a conspicuous blotch of crimson markings within. One of the finest hardy hybrids ever produced, it flowers from May to June.

Rhododendron 'Nancy Evans' is free-flowering with beautiful orange red buds opening to amber hose-in-hose flowers. The new foliage is bronze. A firm favourite when seen flowering in the garden and the plant sales area.

Rhododendron yakushimanum FCC is free-flowering with beautiful pinky red buds opening to pale pink flowers. The broadly bell shaped flowers appear in compact hemispherical clusters in May and June. The leaves are dark green above with a thick fawn coloured indumentum below. The plant remains compact and sturdy growing to 2-3 ft tall and wide in five years.
